Melancholic comfort.


A dark shady place of melancholy, one would not want to leave, from being sad occasionally to being sad all the time, this is how it feels to be in depression. So, what is depression, is it different from being sad and low, how does it feel to be in depression, how to identify depression,  let’s talk about it.



What is depression?


According to the oxford dictionary, depression means feelings of severe despondency and dejection. Sadness, feeling down, having a loss of interest – are the symptoms familiar to all of us, but if they persist it may be depression.

Lack of joy, low interest in performing day to day activities, low enthusiasm in doing the task of interest, frequent mood changes  may be some of the symptoms of depression.

Difference between depression and sadness.

Sadness can be due to a sudden loss, disappointment, or other difficult situations. It is one of the many feelings that living beings have. The feeling of sadness goes quickly and you go back to your life without it much affecting the life.

On the other hand depression is mental illness that effect your mood. It can come up  for no reason and it last for a longer time. People who experiences it have a feeling of being worthless and hopeless. They may feel unreasonable guilt, anger and irritability. Most people loose interest in things that they used to enjoy, and start isolating themselves from others. The person may start overeating or under eating. Some people may also get difficult thoughts about death and to end their life.

How does it feel to be in depression?

Well as mentioned earlier, it’s a dark shady place of great melancholy. Though it’s painful, it’s still comforting. The person going through it starts keeping itself away from the people. She/he starts getting pleasure in isolation. The person also starts to remain irritated and sad for major part of the time. Irregular sleeping pattern, like sleepless nights and sleeping more on the day time. The person becomes rigid and moody without any reason. Lack of focus and a fickle mind. Feeling of being alone in a crowd is also related to a depressed person.

How to identify depression?

11.    Loss of interest.
  2.  Weight gain or weight loss.
  3.    Frequent thoughts of suicide.
  4.  Lack of concentration, slowness in activities.
  5.    Poor appetite.
  6.    To feel alone in a crowd.
  7.  Disturbed sleeping pattern.
      8. Restlessness. There are many other symptoms as well.
So, if you know someone who is facing it or you are the one who is going through it, don’t wait and seek help. Consult a doctor as soon as possible. Talk about this with your family, your friends, as more you talk about it, more it will get easy to fight depression. And most importantly don't loose hope. Everything will be okay, you just need to fight this situation and shine bright again.





Also to the family and friends of the person having depression, please don’t leave such person alone, talk to them, be with them even if they don’t want to, because deep inside, such person too wants to talk and have people around them. Please don’t neglect such person, try to include them in your plans. First they will resist but eventually they will join. In the end, please don’t give up on them, they need your help.
